HMRC launch MTD support for tax agents
As part of supporting tax agents with getting their practice ready for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD), HMRC have launched a MTD Agent Outreach initiative. In the coming days, tax agents should receive an email from the HMRC MTD engagement team, offering assistance ahead of the first group of taxpayers being required to comply with MTD from April 2026.
The email from HMRC will give details of an online form to complete and we would encourage our members to complete the form. Tax agents may be rightly sceptical of whether the email they receive is genuine, but can check this via the HMRC website.
What to expect from the online form
To access the form, agents will need to log in using the Government Gateway ID and password linked to their Agent Services Account (ASA). Agents who do not yet have an ASA will have the option to complete the expression of interest form by signing using the Government Gateway ID and password linked to their existing HMRC online services for agents account.
The form will ask for the agent's permission to be contacted by HMRC via email, as well as details of how many clients an agent expects to have in testing and how many clients will be mandated in the first stage of MTD from April 2026. Tax agents will also be asked to express whether they have an interest in a conversation with HMRC about MTD readiness and testing. Taking part is voluntary and any information provided will be treated confidentially.
What happens after the online form is completed
After a form is submitted, HMRC will review responses and triage contact based on the information provided. Those agents who indicate a higher need for readiness support (e.g. larger volumes) will be prioritised for follow-up.
HMRC may contact those agents who have completed the form to offer additional support. The exact support offered will depend on the level of interest and volume of impacted clients/testing sign-ups. It could be that HMRC will send further information by email, or invite agents to a virtual Peer Group Session. Other agents may receive a direct support discussion with the MTD engagement team.
ATT resources and support
As well as HMRC's resources, the ATT also has a range of MTD resources for members and the public, which are available via our MTD landing page. You may wish to sign up for our MTD peer-discussion groups, where attendees can share and discuss their practical concerns around MTD and support each other in an open forum.
We are also running a MTD – your technical questions answered webinar on 2 October 2025 to help explain areas of uncertainty. You can submit any questions in advance to [email protected] with the subject “MTD webinar” by 19 September. We will do our best to include as many as we can on the day.
