HMRC issue updated MTD software options page

31 July, 2025

Following feedback from the ATT and other professional bodies, HMRC have updated the software option page for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD).

After the changes announced in the spring statement, it will be necessary for the taxpayer (or agent on their behalf) to use third party software to comply with the full MTD ‘journey’ from digital record-keeping through to quarterly updates and the final tax return. We therefore feel it is important for taxpayers and agents to have enough details to make an informed choice about which software to choose.

New interactive tool

The previous HMRC software options page had limited information, so stakeholders including the ATT have been pushing for improvements to make it clearer what each software package can and cannot do.

HMRC have introduced an interactive tool, to help users identify software that meets their particular needs. This tailors the available software choices displayed by allowing users to state which MTD income sources they need to report, whether any other income sources need to be declared, and whether they need digital record keeping functionality to be supported by the same software.

Please share any feedback on the updated HMRC software option page by contacting us at [email protected].

MTD peer-discussion groups

Software has been one of the many MTD topics discussed at our member-led MTD peer-discussion groups, where attendees can share and discuss their practical concerns around MTD and support each other in an open forum. You can still sign up for our upcoming sessions and share your feedback or concerns as you prepare for MTD becoming a legal requirement for the first group of taxpayers in April 2026.

The ATT has a range of MTD resources for members and the public, which are available via our MTD landing page.
