The Power of Mentoring: Celebrating National Mentoring Day
National Mentoring Day takes place every year on 27th October. The day looks to celebrate and support mentoring, educate everyone about the value of mentoring and connect mentors and mentees.
Mentoring is a powerful force behind many of the world’s most successful individuals. Consider the following examples:
- Oprah Winfrey was mentored by author and poet, Maya Angelou. Oprah reportedly said about Maya: “She was there for me always, guiding me through some of the most important years of my life”.
- Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg was mentored by former Apple Chief Executive, Steve Jobs. When Jobs died, Zuckerberg posted: “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world.”
- Indra Nooyi, former CEO of PepsiCo, has spoken openly about the role of mentorship throughout her life, saying, “I’m a product of great mentoring.”
- Richard Branson credits airline entrepreneur Sir Freddie Laker with helping him navigate the challenges of launching Virgin Atlantic. In honour of their relationship, Branson named a Virgin aircraft “The Spirit of Sir Freddie.”
These examples of famous mentors and mentees demonstrate that there is a benefit to mentoring – it’s about building meaningful relationships that last, and learning from others’ experiences and perspectives.

What our mentors say
“Offering mentoring via ATT Mentor Match has been an insightful experience, and allowed me to develop my mentoring skills in a structured space. I have met some brilliant individuals through the scheme and connecting with them has broadened my awareness of the tax profession. I have been able to maintain and develop my pastoral soft skills now that I no longer have direct reports in my current role.
If anyone is considering becoming a mentor, I would highly recommend the ATT Mentor Match programme. It is accessible and easy to manage, allowing you to be as involved as you wish with offering mentoring relationships. You can choose what type of services you offer and use the various materials provided by the ATT to support you in starting/continuing your mentoring journey.”

What our mentees say
“The ATT mentoring programme is brilliant! Being a mentee with the ATT was a fantastic experience that truly shaped my career. At a time when I was running my own business but looking to transition into employment and gain greater exposure in tax it gave me the strength to change career, the self-confidence to pursue a new path, and the chance to speak with someone who truly understands the world of taxation.
My mentor believed in me, challenged me, and helped me take the leap. I’ m incredibly grateful for her support which was exactly what I was looking for. As a mentee, I discovered that mentoring is less about answers and more about unlocking potential.”
