HMRC Compliance Checks and Disputes - YouTube guidance for taxpayers

21 February, 2023

Following consultation with the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) and other professional bodies, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have added a series of videos on Compliance Checks to their YouTube channel.

The short videos are intended to help explain some of the complexities of a Compliance Check to unrepresented taxpayers, and to offer guidance as to options available in the event of a disagreement with HMRC.

Whilst most ATT members will be familiar with HMRC processes during a Compliance Check and the methods of having a decision reviewed, the videos may be helpful to members of the public who find themselves at the centre of an HMRC Compliance Check.

The four videos currently available can be found together as a suite or can be accessed by their individual topic areas, as follows:

1. What should I do if I disagree with an HMRC decision?

2. Can a statutory review resolve a dispute with HMRC over direct taxes and penalties? Direct Taxes include e.g. Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Corporation Tax.

3. Can a statutory review resolve a dispute with HMRC over indirect taxes and penalties? Indirect Taxes include e.g. Value Added Tax and Customs Duty.

4. How do I resolve a dispute with HMRC during a compliance check?

Whilst the videos may help inform taxpayers about HMRC processes, Compliance Checks can be a complex area and, in many cases, it may be worth seeking professional advice at an early stage in the process.
