Government opens consultation on digital ID
The UK government has launched a public consultation on plans for a new national digital identity system, intended to make access to public services more efficient and user‑friendly. The consultation, published on 10 March 2026 and closing on 5 May 2026, sets out proposals for a digital ID that is ‘useful, inclusive and trusted,’ and optional for users.
The system is expected to streamline interactions across government services, reducing bureaucracy and improving consistency in how individuals prove their identity. It may also have significant implications for the tax system, particularly around access to HMRC services, identity verification, and how agents act on behalf of clients. The consultation also invites feedback on system design, governance and data‑sharing arrangements, with some questions aimed specifically at experts and organisations.
Given the likely relevance of the proposed digital ID system for the administration of tax, agent‑client relationships, and the broader digital transformation of HMRC, ATT will be submitting a formal response to the consultation.
