Right to work checks return to face to face

All employers have obligations to prevent illegal working by carrying out right to work checks before they take on a new employee.

During the pandemic, the Government allowed employers to carry out these checks remotely, and the process proved so popular, that the temporary easement was extended on more than one occasion in the last couple of years.

However, the easement has now come to an end, and employers need to be aware that from 1 October 2022, right to work checks must be carried out in one of the following ways:

  • an in-person manual check, using original documents
  • through the Home Office’s online checking service, or
  • via an identification document validation technology (IDVT) identity check.
