Classroom resources
Are you interested in delivering a tax session for school children? Both HMRC and the ATT have a range of resources to support you.
HMRC's Junior Tax Facts
HMRC provides free resources for teachers and parents as part of their Tax Facts programme. These are split into two programmes:
- Junior Tax Facts – for children aged 8 to 13
- Tax facts – for students aged 14 to 17
Each programme consists of lesson plans, presentations, activity sheets and delivery guides. These are available in both English and Welsh. HMRC also provide a series of quick introductory videos to introduce children to key tax issues.
Using HMRC materials in action
Our technical team have taken HMRC's Junior Tax Facts resources into their local primary schools and the lesson plans that they used can be found below:
- Lesson plan one – If you are able to bring food into the classroom, this plan starts with the HMRC video and exercises, before engaging the children with the subject of VAT with a taste test to address the perennial question - is it a cake or a biscuit?
- Lesson plan two – This plan takes the children through what taxes pay for, tax and spending priorities and how much tax we should pay, before extending into the role of the tax profession and some tax history.
You may also find the ATT’s tax videos for young people helpful in developing and delivering classroom sessions.
Outside a school setting, the ATT technical team have also presented short practically focused tax sessions for young people aged 18 – 21 looking to enter the world of work. The slide pack used to deliver these sessions covers a basic introduction to taxes, how tax works if you are an employee and some of the basics of self-assessment for the self-employed.
If members have taken part in similar exercises and have ideas or lesson plans that they would like to share, please let us know and we would be delighted to include them here.
