From Trainee to Senior Advisor with the ATT Qualification

When Hannah Williams joined Dodd & Co in 2019, she had a maths degree and a keen interest in building a career where her skills could develop. Just a few years later, she's a Senior Tax Adviser – largely thanks to the ATT qualification.

Hannah began studying for the ATT qualification in 2020, motivated by watching colleagues one or two years ahead of her who were progressing in their knowledge and expertise after completing the course. She recognised the benefits and decided to study for it, too, and says the impact was immediate. From understanding VAT and legislation, to learning how to complete complicated tax calculations by hand, Hannah developed a wide-ranging, practical skillset that she could apply from day one.

“Before ATT, I had a basic understanding of tax, but now I advise clients confidently, with a strong foundation across all areas of tax,” she says.

Despite starting her studies remotely during the COVID pandemic, the interactive online sessions and real-world examples kept her engaged. Returning to in-person classes after lockdown gave her further opportunities to deepen her learning and build connections with other students. Her efforts paid off. Not only did she pass her exams, but she also won two prizes during her studies – a testament to her dedication.

Since then, Hannah has been promoted each year and is now a Senior Tax Adviser. She credits ATT with giving her the confidence and technical grounding to take on new responsibilities and consider future specialisms.

“The ATT Qualification has had a huge impact on my career,” she says. “The content was challenging at first, but it helped me grow enormously, both professionally and personally. I’ve used the knowledge every step of the way.”

Hannah has since gone on to achieve her CTA qualification and continues to thrive in a role that offers variety, continuous learning and meaningful relationships with clients. Now a mentor to junior colleagues, Hannah shares her experiences to support others on their training journeys. She encourages colleagues to pursue the ATT qualification, acknowledging the commitment it requires but also the long-term value it brings.

Simon Kirkbride, Tax Partner at Dodd & Co, adds: “Putting our employees through the ATT qualification gives them valuable knowledge alongside real on-the-job experience. We’re passionate about supporting our team’s development, and we’ve seen first-hand how the qualification builds their confidence and enhances their skills.”

Hannah’s story shows how the ATT qualification builds more than tax knowledge; it builds careers. From junior team member to Senior Tax Adviser in just a few years, her journey proves the value of investing in talent.
