‘HMRC Assist’ for VAT: research volunteers wanted

HMRC have contacted the ATT and other professional bodies as they are looking for volunteers for user research to help develop HMRC Assist for VAT.

HMRC Assist for VAT will provide users of third-party VAT filing software with tailored feedback on draft VAT returns before submission. The feedback will be generated using HMRC data and analytical tools, aiming to help users identify potential errors or inconsistencies and improving the accuracy of VAT returns and reducing the need for HMRC compliance checks.

Who HMRC are looking to involve

HMRC are seeking volunteers who are responsible for submitting VAT returns on behalf of micro and small businesses. This includes any of the following who are involved in VAT reporting:

  • Business owners and employees
  • Agents such as accountants, bookkeepers and tax advisers

HMRC’s research team is particularly keen to speak to individuals who may be new to VAT filing or do not feel confident about VAT rules.

What participation involves

Selected volunteers will be invited to take part in online research sessions. During these sessions, participants will be shown early designs of the HMRC Assist for VAT service and asked to provide feedback. HMRC will use this input to refine the service.

Timelines

The initial research period will run from mid-June to the end of August 2026. Round 1 has already taken place, but there is still an opportunity to volunteer for Round 2. Expressions of interest must be submitted by 10 July to be considered.

Further opportunities are expected later in the year, including testing of user communications and guidance (dates to be confirmed).

Data protection and confidentiality

HMRC have confirmed that only necessary personal data will be collected to arrange and conduct research sessions. This information will be stored securely and not shared outside the research team. Any published findings will be anonymised.
