HMRC have issued recently a Consultation Document concerning a proposal to increase the use of online facilities for filing of forms for VAT including registration forms. However, HMRC have also issued a Press Release to confirm that the existing exemption from online filing for businesses run exclusively by people who are practising members of a particular religious group will continue.
It also confirms that payments made through the bank giro system are treated as electronic payments. Details of how to obtain Bank Giro paying in slips are also given. The full text of the Press Release is reproduced below:
There are no plans to remove the exemption for business that are run exclusively by people who are practising members of a religious group who beliefs are incompatible with the use of electronic communications.
It can take four to six weeks for VAT Bank Giro paying-in slips to be printed and sent out. The telephone numbers are 01702 366376 or 01702 366314. Customers will be asked to leave their VAT number on an answer machine and HMRC will then arrange to send you a book of paying-in slips. The book goes direct to the address we hold for the customer so there is no need for a 64-8. They can also order a book by e-mail through a structured form on HMRC's web site.
