A tax trainee works alongside experienced tax professionals to learn the required procedures needed for a tax career. Some trainee positions are offered as apprenticeships. A tax trainee typically starts out with basic duties such as entering client information into a tax preparation software program.
This role would have a mixed tax focus and it is likely to be based in an independent firm or a smaller Top 20 practice.
Duties and responsibilities could include:
- Preparation of tax accounting calculations
- Analysis of financial data of a complex nature
- Carry out tax research and summarise findings
- Corporation tax compliance
- Learn about PAYE and draft PAYE advice
- Respond to HMRC correspondence and assisting with enquiries
- Preparation of tax notes for accounts and reporting
- Respond to queries from finance functions and auditors
- Study for professional qualifications (ATT, CTA or others)
Person Specification:
- You will either be looking for an apprenticeship in tax or you will already be in a similar role currently within an accountancy practice or involved in a more mixed accounts and tax role, with a desire to specialise in tax.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to prepare and present accurate, effective, complete and easily understood pieces of work
- Strong PC skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to work independently and to deadlines
- Ability to work in a team and show willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily
