COVID-19 and May 2020 Exams Update

We have taken the difficult decision to cancel our May 2020 exams in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, and Government guidance. The health and wellbeing of our students and colleagues is our highest priority.

20 March 2020: Email sent to all ATT students

We know you will be very anxious to find out what is happening in respect of the exams due to take place on 6 and 7 May 2020 in the light of COVID-19.

The health and wellbeing of our students, invigilators and staff are our top priority. We have therefore taken the difficult and unprecedented decision that we have no choice but to cancel the May 2020 exam session.

I am sure this will come as a great disappointment to you, as it has to us.

What will happen next?

We know that you will have many questions and we won't have answers to all of them yet. We aim to exercise as much flexibility as possible in these circumstances, so we will be taking the following steps:

  • All exam entries will be automatically transferred to the November 2020 session
  • All student registrations and exam passes will be extended by six months

More information

We have compiled some FAQs which can be found here. Please visit the FAQs regularly as we will be updating these as the situation develops.

Paper 4 - Corporate Taxation

Information relevant ONLY for students who had entered for Paper 4 - Corporate Taxation in May 2020

We are endeavouring to organise an internet-delivered exam for Paper 4 in late June or early July 2020. If this proves possible then the exam will be attempted on screen (using your own device) and monitored by remote invigilators who would confirm your identity and safeguard the integrity of the exam.  We have selected this paper because the numbers entered make this potentially viable as it will be the first time we have offered examinations in this way. We are very hopeful that this will go ahead but we cannot guarantee this yet. We will be in touch with you as soon as we can with further information.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding the contents of this email which are not covered by the FAQs, please email the Education Team on education [at] att.org.uk. Our response time to emails will be slower due to the volume we are receiving so please bear with us and thank you for your patience.

We wish you good health during these extraordinary circumstances.

28 April 2020: Email sent to ATT students (Paper 4 Corporate Taxation sitters only)

We are very pleased to advise you that we are now in a position to confirm that we can offer ATT Paper 4 Corporate Taxation exam via remote invigilation.

Thank you for your patience while we have been working on this. FAQs and guidance will follow soon, as there are still some details to finalise. We are now in a position to provide some important information on what actions you should take to check you will be able to sit via remote invigilation.

Please note that minimum IT requirements are detailed below.

The testing platform we are using is called ProProctor. This is offered by our third party supplier Prometric. The ATT has had a long involvement with Prometric in relation to our Computer Based Exams (CBEs).

What should I do now?

Run the System Readiness Check. It is crucial that you run this check as soon as possible.

You will only be able to complete your exam on a laptop or a PC. You cannot:

☒ Use a second screen

☒ Connect your laptop to a docking station

When running the System Readiness Check, you must unplug these if you have them so you are replicating the set up you will need to sit your exam via remote invigilation.

What if I do not have the minimum IT requirements?

Where possible, you should contact your employer's IT department to discuss this.

It may be that you can easily resolve the issue. For example you may not have a Webcam on your PC, in which case you would need to purchase an external Webcam to attach to your PC.

The remote invigilation software is designed so that most devices will meet the minimum IT requirements.

If you are unable to resolve any issues, then unfortunately you would be unable to sit the July exams via remote invigilation.

Minimum IT requirements

  • Screen Resolution

1024 x 768 is the minimum resolution required
  • Operating System

Windows 7 or higher | MacOS 10.13 or higher
  • Web Browser

Current version of Google Chrome. IMPORTANT - please note you can only use Google Chrome, no other web browsers are supported.
  • Internet Connection Speed

    0.5 mbps or greater
  • Webcam resolution

    640 X 480p
  • Microphone must be enabled

Exam date and time

ATT Paper 4 Corporate Taxation

Friday 3 July — start time to be confirmed

You will need to go through security and ID checking procedures before your exam starts so you will need to be ready to begin this process 30 minutes before the start time.

This is the first occasion that you will have used remote invigilation for your ATT exam and we have not been able to give you as much advance warning as we would have done in normal circumstances. Therefore, without setting a precedent for future exam sittings, 15 minutes extra time will be permitted for this exam.

What’s next?

In the next few days you will receive an email with links to some FAQs and guidance. You will also be asked to complete an online form to confirm that you would like to sit the exam. Remember, the time limit for any existing passes you have will be extended by six months so by sitting this exam your current passes will not be affected. If you are unsuccessful then you will be offered a free entry to the November 2020 sitting of Paper 4.

We really hope that you will take this opportunity to sit Paper 4 which you had registered to sit in May.

Dear Student

There is just one week left to confirm your Paper 4 Corporate Taxation exam entry. Submit the online form by the close of Tuesday 26 May 2020, to ensure you can sit your exam this summer.

We are pleased to share two videos, so that you can see what the online exam looks like, and how it will work on the day.

  • Video 1 – an on the day view of the exam and the functionality available to you
  • Video 2 – why you should practice typing your answers using the demo Paper 4 question, and how this will vary slightly to your on the day experience

The demo is simple to use and designed to give you a similar exam experience, so that you can focus on the content of your exam on the day itself. A third video showing you how to deal with calculations will follow shortly. We hope that these videos will help you feel more comfortable with sitting your exam online.

We have updated our FAQs with more guidance and information. If you have any queries which are not answered here, then please email us at education [at] att.org.uk.
