Become an Apprentice

ATT worked together with employers, professional bodies and sector partners to create a new Higher Apprenticeship programme in Tax, creating an exciting new route to high-skill careers in taxation.

The new Framework includes distinct occupational routes for the taxation profession, closely aligned with established professional standards maintained by the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT).

What is a Higher Apprenticeship?

As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Anyone living in England, over 16 years-old and not in full-time education can.
Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the apprentices’ ability and the industry sector. The minimum salary is £2.60 per hour (from 1st October 2012 will change to £2.65 per hour); however, many apprentices earn significantly more. (-National Apprenticeship Service)

The employer employs the Apprentice for at least 30 hours per week. They support their Apprentice through ‘on’ and ‘off-the-job’ training, e.g. by allowing them the time they need to undertake formal training activities. The employer also makes an agreed contribution to the cost of the Apprentice’s training.

The Apprentice undertakes the duties associated with a defined job role in the business. As part of and alongside those core duties, the Apprentice undertakes work-based, formal and informal training to develop a blend of technical skills and wider competence.

The Government contributes to the cost of an Apprentice’s training; the level of public funding varies depending on the age of the Apprentice and the sector they work in. Government also helps employers to recruit Apprentices through the NAS online vacancy service, ‘Apprenticeship vacancies’.

Most employers work with an external training provider to deliver ‘off-the-job’ and some ‘on-the-job’ training. Employers do have the option to deliver all of an Apprentice’s training in-house.
