General

Q. What do I have to do to become a member of the ATT?

A. Membership is restricted to those who have passed the Association's examinations, have a minimum of two years' acceptable current practical experience in United Kingdom taxation and are fit and suitable for admission.

Q. Question 10 on the registration form refers to the Association's prospectus. Where do I get this from?

A. The Association's prospectus "How to Become a Member" is available to download from the Students' section of this website. You should obtain this and read it carefully before submitting an application to register as a student.

Q. Who do I make the cheque payable to?

A. The Association of Taxation Technicians.

Q. Can you invoice my company?

A. No. We do not issue invoices for the payment of registration and examination entry fees.

Registration

Q. What exams do I need to have passed to register?

A. There are no minimum educational requirements for registering as a student with the Association.

Q. Do I have to be working in tax to register?

A. No. You do not need to be working in tax to register or to sit the exams but you will need two years' relevant experience in tax to become a member of the ATT.

Q. Do I need to be registered with you before I choose a course provider?

A. Some course providers do stipulate that you register with us before commencing a course with them.

Q. Do I need sponsors if I am re-registering?

A. Yes. You are required to have a complete statement from an eligible sponsor on your registration form. This can be your current employer, regardless of what industry you are in, or a person who holds one of the relevant professional qualifications listed on page 3 of the prospectus.

Q. I am self-employed. Do I still need sponsors?

A. Yes. A sponsor does not have to provide financial sponsorship but must sign the form to indicate that the information on it is correct, to the best of their knowledge.

Q. Can I register online?

A. You currently cannot register as a student online. You can download the application form from this website or use the secure form to request a prospectus and the form will be sent to you in the post.

Q. When will I receive confirmation of my registration?

A. You should receive written confirmation of your registration and your student number from our General Office once your application has been approved and your details entered on our database - allow about 10 working days for this. You will need to quote your student number when entering for examinations so please make a note of it.

Exams

Q. I live outside of the UK. Can I take the exams in my home country?

A. No. The exams are held only in the United Kingdom.

Q. When are the exams?

A. The exams are held every May and November. Exact dates are published in the Association's prospectus.

Q. When does my exam form have to be in?

A. You must request, complete and return an examination entry form with the correct fee before the end of February if you wish to sit in May or before 31 August if you wish to sit in November. Entry forms received after the closing date will not be accepted. It may be advisable to send your examination entry by guaranteed delivery so as to have proof of postage. We cannot accept faxed exam entries until we receive the relevant fee therefore please do not fax your exam entry.

Q. Where is the exact location of my exam centre?

A. We are unable to confirm exact locations of the examination centres until candidates are sent their examination instructions approximately four weeks before the examination. At that time you will be provided with a map of the local area and directions to your exam centre.

Q. When are the exam results published?

A. The results for the November examinations are published in mid-January and the results for the May examination are published in mid-July . The names of those student who have attained the examination requirement for admission to membership will appear in The Times. A full pass list will be available from 12 Upper Belgrave Street. On the day before publication of the results, a letter is sent to each examination candidate giving them their individual result. Despite the temptation please do not telephone the office as under no circumstances whatsoever can results be given over the telephone.

The pass lists are also available on this website. The new results will replace the last results just after midnight. If you are accessing the exam results page please ensure you update your browser using the refresh button and remove old pages from your internet history folder and cache folders to ensure you see the new results. Please also make sure you have an up-to-date version of Acrobat Reader installed on your PC as the results will be in the form of PDF documents.

Q. There are past exam papers on the website but where do I get the answers from?

A. Past papers and examiners' comments are on this website. The answers will not be published on the website. Please refer to the main tutorial bodies.

Tuition

Q. Do you run any courses?

A. No but we do have Spring and Autumn Training conferences which cover key areas of the syllabus and will complement your studies. Previous attendees have indicated that they find these conferences a very valuable part of examination preparation. Booking forms are mailed to all registered students with the Students' Newsletter.

Q. Do you sell any books?

A. We publish "Essential Law for The Tax Adviser" and "Essential Accounting for the Taxation Technician", which may be ordered from our General Office.

Q. Do you recommend the Tolley or the CCH books to take into the exam room?

A. You may take The Tolley Yellow and Orange Tax Handbooks or the CCH Editions Ltd Tax Statutes and Statutory Instruments into the examination room. We do not express a preference for one or the other. If you are unsure about which to use then you should talk to your course provider. A full list of permitted books in the examination room is on page 7 of the prospectus.

Q. Can you recommend a course provider?

A. No. We do not supervise or administer course providers and are therefore unable to make recommendations about the programmes they run. We have a list of organisations who have let us know that they are running a course and this is available to download on the website or you may request a printed copy from our General Office.
