Membership Entitlements, Benefits and Services

ATT members have a number of entitlements, benefits and services available to them.

Membership Entitlements

As a member of the Association you are entitled to use the letters ATT after your name and the descriptive title ‘Taxation Technician’. This demonstrates to members of the public that you are a member of the oldest and largest professional body involved with UK tax compliance and that you comply with the Professional Rules and Practice Guidelines set down by the Association.

Tax Adviser

This monthly journal includes technical articles, current tax notes, digests of tax cases and news from the Association.

Technical Newsletter

This is published quarterly and is sent to members by e-mail.

Annotated copy of the Finance Act or Acts and other publications as the Council may decide.

Currently this includes:

  • Tolley’s annual Tax Guide
  • Hardman’s Tax Rates and Tables.
  • Mouse Mat and Tax Rate Card

These are published annually following the budget.

Membership Services

The opportunity to register with the Association as a supervisory authority for monitoring and compliance under the 2007 Money Laundering Regulations. You can register with the ATT AML Registration Scheme here.

Conferences and Seminars

ATT organises an annual tax conference held in a variety of locations around the UK.
Half-day seminars are arranged at intervals throughout the year, covering topical tax and non-tax subjects.

Branch network

ATT Members are able to use the Branch Network, which provides technical meetings open to members, students and the public. There may be a charge for some meetings.

The Tony Arnold Library

ATT members and students are able to use the Tony Arnold Library for research and reference purposes.

Direct Professional Access

Direct Professional Access to barristers practising in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and to advocates practising in Scotland, is now available for members. Further information is available from standards@att.org.uk

Members’ Support Service

This aims to help those with work-related personal problems. An independent, sympathetic fellow practitioner will listen in strictest confidence and give support. Please telephone 0845 744 6611 to be put in touch with a member of the Support Service. Please note that the Members’ Support Service does not offer advice of a technical nature.

Members in Practice Registration Scheme for self-employed members

Professional Indemnity Insurance

This has been compulsory for members in practice since January 2000. Please see the Professional Standards section for all guidance in relation to your membership obligations.

For firms with a gross fee income of less than £400,000, the annual minimum limit of indemnity for each and every claim is the greater of:
• 2.5 x the gross fee income; and
• £100,000.

For firms with a greater fee income than £400,000, the annual minimum limit of indemnity for each and every claim is £1million.

ATT Merchandise

Certificate Framing Service

McGrigors Tax Enquiry Help Facility

McGrigors, the commercial law firm and tax investigation specialists, are pleased to be working with the Association and offering its members a tax enquiry help facility.

Members can email their query to ATTenquiries@mcgrigors.com, or access the special link on our website, www.mcgrigors.com. Alternatively, members can telephone the helpline (020 7054 2569) with their query. The initial conversation will be free, subject to a maximum length of 20 minutes (although this may be extended, at McGrigors's discretion). Please note that McGrigors aim to respond to emails within 24 hours, but let them know if the enquiry is urgent.

Please ensure that you quote your membership number when contacting McGrigors with your query. Advice or assistance beyond the first 20 minutes will be charged at their normal rates, and they are happy to discuss those with you. The service will be available from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays). The following areas will be covered by the help facility:

  • HMRC enquiries (ITSA, CTSA, PAYE)
  • HMRC investigations (COP8, COP9)
  • HMRC inspection and information powers
  • Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility
  • VAT enquiries
  • Customs duties
